Imagine 2020 on the square
Alongside the theatrical performances Cry me a River by Anna Mendelssohn and Expanding Energy by Davis Freeman, Parfum de Boem Boem organises an evocative cycle trip in the weekend of 23-25 September past building sites and spots where artists like Harriët Van Reek & Geerten Ten Bosch show us their vision of the future.
And the Schouwburgplein, home to the Rotterdamse Schouwburg, is the venue where Rotterdamse Oogst is holding a real Foodlab 2020. With the aid of artists, installations and kitchens, we will provide a foretaste of the menu for 2020. What will we be eating then? Where will our food come from? And how will we dispose of our waste? There’s plenty of food for thought!
Every resident of Rotterdam is invited to share his or her wishes, aspirations and fears about the year 2020 and deposit them on a 120-metre-long table that will be set up in the Schouwburgplein, the public space in front of the Rotterdamse Schouwburg from September 15th till October 2nd. This will be a spot where you can meet others, exchange things, picnic, recycle your waste and much more. By the end of the period, the table will have grown into an installation, an event and a emorial combined.

Expanding energy 24th and 25th September 16:00, location Rotterdamse Schouwburg
Freeman quantifies our energy level Davis Freeman doesn’t just point a warning finger at a very topical theme that of energy but gets us actively involved. Expanding Energy is a four-part performance in which experts and performing artists join forces to kick-start a discussion and reveal contradictions. The entire package aligns science, politics, economics and spirituality with the (performing) arts. A deliciously unstable balance between information, provocation and entertainment. There is no need to book for all four performances: each one stands on its own though booking for all four will give a much richer experience.
Defining Energy
16:00
Two performers explore different definitions of energy potential, spiritual, kinetic, sexual, electrical, personal and political and perform a dazzling range of experiments in this field. Davis Freeman and Wendy Houston do not spare their energy in this endeavour.
Securing Energy
17:30
Two rhetorically overendowed and smartly clad lobbyists, played in a virtuoso performance by Jerry Killick and Kylie Walters, monitor existing energy sources and look for innovative new technologies to meet our future energy needs. Do we really have to relinquish our hard-earned liberties and material welfare to create a sustainable future? Or will technology come to the rescue once again?
Consuming Energy
18:30
This event starts with a preprandial open discussion between energy experts. You can share this exchange of views, in which the energy problem is viewed from both local and global perspectives and then enjoy a dinner prepared with locally sourced produce … or would you rather have a deepfreeze hamburger with French fries after all? Foodlab 2020 from Rotterdamse Oogst (Rotterdam Harvest) lays on a buffet meal that provides food for thought as well as for the stomach.
Expanding Energy
21:00
To round off the series, words are transformed into deeds. What pledges are you willing to make to build a sustainable future? Freeman’s performers mix an explosive cocktail of energy questions with the aid of the virtuoso musicians Paul Lemp and Joachim Arbeit from the German post-industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten (Collapsing New Buildings) and 25 local dancers who put on a truly energetic show.
