Transforma, Torres Vedras
Teatro Maria Matos, Lisboa
This programme is part of the European project IMAGINE 2020, Art and Climate Change, of which Transforma (Torres Vedras) is a network member. It was created to support artistic work that investigates the causes and effects of climate change and advocates changes to the cultural sector and society in general.
Transforma is a Laboratory for Contemporary Artistic Practices that research new possibilities of encounter with People in the transient territory of the city. Many questions arise persistently throughout the many activities fostered by Transforma – artists in residence, ateliers, debates, publications – stressing the need to understand, in a more effective and different fashion, art and its relationship with the nature and the world we live in. Transforma also promotes strategic investigation and experimentation and the promotion of sustained ways of action. The program being initiated, and that will finish in 2015, deals precisely with the relation between people/cities/sustainability.
As a municipal theatre, Teatro Maria Matos attaches great value to the capacity of art to make us think about the world we live in. Each quarter, through debates, workshops with children, special events, presentations and commissions of works of art, the theater’s program focuses on a specific theme. Between May and July, the guiding principle of our program is dedicated to the theme of Abundance. While debating this theme, we were struck by the stark contradiction between the age-old positive image of abundance and its recent discredit, as we are heading towards an age of shortage.
Art, Climate Change and Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is an amazingly simple and straightforward concept. It is based on the irrefutable fact that it is impossible to endlessly grow within a finite system and adverts that humankind cannot continue to extract minerals, use water reserves, shrink forests, extinct animal and plant species and pollute the air as if they were endlessly available. It states the obvious truth that humankind has to learn to live within the boundaries of Ecosystem Earth, for the simple reason that it is the only planet we’ve got to live on.
Climate change has become the most talked about of all ecological issues, because it is the one that is already causing measurable effects on a planetary scale, but comparable risks of crossing the limits exist on nearly all levels of the global ecosystem. It has become clear that profound and radical change is needed if we want to return to an ecological balance, maintain our economic and social standards and create opportunities for a better life in the poorer regions of the globe.
The changes we need are profound because they have to be applied by all people, organizations, enterprises and authorities on all levels of society; they are radical because they imply real changes in life styles and value systems.
The program Art, Climate change and Sustainable Development, realized by Transforma (Torres Vedras) and Teatro Maria Matos (Lisbon) acknowledges that the cultural sector and the arts have a real role to play in the transition to sustainability.
